Mustang is one of the most famous tourist spots in the world. Often known as the remote regions of Nepal, there are a lot of great things about Mustang that tourists don’t explore at all.

Located in the northern part of Western Nepal, Upper Mustang is geographically, culturally, ethnically, and religiously closer to Tibet, so you can find the culture indulged there.

Lo Manthang
The first and the most important name in the list of villages of Upper Mustang has to be Lo Manthang. Often known as the forbidden kingdom, Lo Manthang presents history in itself.
As you explore the village, you will find monasteries that are 3 centuries old. Along with that, the Jampa monastery gives you beautiful views of the valley.
You will also find Chode Monastery along with Thupchen Gompa. Both of these places provide a rich dive into the history. Festivals like Tiji are celebrated at these monasteries every year.
Kagbeni Village
Let’s talk about one of the most iconic villages in the Upper Mustang region. Yes, the famous Kagbeni village, which is more or less the beauty of the region.
It is also called the gateway to Upper Mustang, which is located at 2810m. From the views of Kali Gandaki to Jhong Khola, you will find stunning Nilgiri at your disposal.
What’s more beautiful is the walking trail along with the monasteries, traditional houses, rich history, and the right mixture of Tibetan and Nepalese architecture.
Yara Village
When you move ahead from Dhi Gaun, you will reach a place called Yara village. When we focus on the villages of Upper Mustang, Yara village is mainly famous amongst the trekkers.
You will have to walk 40 minutes from Dhi Gaun in order to reach Yara village. Starting from the Luri Gompa region, Yara village is located at the top of the hill.
Interestingly, there is a lake below this village, so a lot of tall houses aren’t allowed to be constructed. Most of the living arrangements are one-storey houses. You will also find a sandy cliff right across the village.
Dhakmar Village
As you go higher, finding villages of Upper Mustang, the names just get more unique one after the other. Dhakmar village, sitting at an altitude of 3820m, provides stunning views.
A mystical atmosphere, along with red cliffs, barren hills, and demon-slain, there is much more than what catches the eye. The Trek Nepal has done some tours to Dhakmar village, and the stories are unique.
Rich in iron oxide, these red cliffs are accompanied by caves whcih was used for meditation and staying in the past. The spiritual and religious significance of these caves remains in the history books.
Ghami village
Talking about uniqueness, the Ghami village is highly famous for the mani walls. Trekkers will find the mani walls stretching hundreds of meters along the trekking route.
You will be surprised to see so many stones being placed with the carvings of Om Mane Padme Hum. Historically, it is believed that Guru Rinpoche slayed a massive demoness in the same place. Finally, the Samye Monastery was formed.
Ghami lies just above 3500m, providing the unique perspective of Mustang. The village is highly useful for agriculture as you will find fertile fields of barley, buckwheat, mustard, apple orchards, mountains, etc.
Marpha village
Probably the most famous village in the Mustang region has to be Marpha. Mainly known for the apples, this particular village carries history that entices the visitors.
Marpha is famous for its sightseeing options as it is situated at 2650m. The lush green apple orchards, along with the Samtelung monastery, hold history and culture.
This particular village is inhabited by Thakali people of four different clans. They include Lalchan, Hirachan, Jwarchan, and Pannachan. You will find agriculture, livestock, tourism, etc in the place.
Chhoser village
Let’s move a bit higher in the case of villages of Upper Mustang. Located closer to the walled city of Lo Manthang, Chhoser village provides views and attractions at the same time.
As you want to reach Chhoser village, you will have to get past the likes of Nenyul, Dhuk, Namgyal, Thinggar, Kimaling, Nyamdo, Chumjung, etc.
Two of the famous caves located in the village include Nyiphuk and Jhong caves. They were used as meditation retreats by monks and locals. One can truly understand the life of Upper Mustang here.
Chele Village
The last name in the list of villages of Upper Mustang includes Chele village. Situated just above 3000m, this particular village takes you back in time.
It is one of the most traditional villages in the Mustang region. Covered with stunning views of Niligiri and Tilicho Peak, you will find Buddhist shrines and culture being carved into the village
A closer village to Chele is the Ghyakar village. Located at 3562m, this village also provides the charm of traditional houses, dun landscapes, etc.

The Nepal Tourism Board also needs to take matters more seriously regarding the preservation of the art, history, and culture of these villages. Some of the villages we missed out include Chhusang, Ghiling, Syangboche, Ghami, Marang, etc.
